Local Elections May 2019

Land News   |   Sector News

This year’s local elections on 2 May have so far been decidedly over-shadowed by Brexit. Despite this, these are the biggest set of council elections since 2015 and represent an important event in the political calendar.  The knock-on impact on local development, particularly local plan making, could be significant if the balance of power changes across different councils.  A total of 272 councils are holding elections, with some electing all members and others only re-electing by thirds.  We’ll be keeping a watchful eye on 36 councils across the South East and Home Counties where we’re most active.  The volatile political climate makes it difficult to predict outcomes, but shifting balances of power will certainly impact the local planning process.
